Everyday Evidence of Hazen School District Successes

Congratulations to the golf and track teams at the regional competitions. The girls’ golf team finished second. Bethany Leier was the overall winner and Kaydee Stewart was chosen as the Region 5 golf coach of the year. Our girls’ track team finished second in the region and will have a strong representation at the state meet. Kaylene Klein is the Senior Athlete of the Year and John Ward was chosen as the regional coach of the year. The boys’ track team finished 5th and 5 athletes have qualified for state. Good luck to all the teams and coaches at the state meets. Attached are the golf and track results and the list of state qualifiers.

Past Evidence:

  • The instrumental and vocal musicians for earning 23 stars at the state competition and Cole Dauenhauer also received an “Outstanding Performer” award for his violin solo.
  • Eva Byerley placed 3rd at the North Dakota “Know Your State” competition.
  • Breanna Sailer placed third in Poetry and Dawson Brown placed sixth in Extemporaneous Speaking. Morgan Hochsprung (Speech to Entertain) and Quentin Corcoran (Humorous Interpretation) received Superior medals at the state speech meet.
  • Anna Gustafson, Randy Riepl, Matthew Oestreich, Morgan Hochsprung, Kylie Wahl, Courtney Rask, Jasmine Busche, Makaela Unterseher, Megan McCarthy, Eileen Addink, Haley Sailer, McKenzie Walters, and Elise Hintz received silver medals at State FCCLA and Benjamin Stevenson placed 3rd out of 45 students in the Knowledge Bowl competition.
  • Ben Harvey, Bethany Goodwin, MacKenzie Reinhardt, Tyler Wolf, Elise Hintz, and Mikayla Ward had their films screened at the Dakota Digital Film Festival. Special congratulations to MacKenzie Reinhardt for winning third place in the inaugural Emerging Filmmaker competition.
  • Jonah Zimmerman is a Traveling Award winner for his art piece “Mystery Eyes”. Jonah also had his piece “Mighty Universe” chosen by Rep. Kevin Cramer as a Congressional Art Award winner. This honor will provide the opportunity to have “Mighty Universe” displayed in Washington D.C.
  • The Hazen speech team took 1st place at the Region VII competition and Mrs. Ness was named the regional coach of the year. State participants this year are Olivia Byerley, Celelia Pfliger, Eileen Addink, Breanna Sailer, Quentin Corcoran, Kennedy Sundsbak, Aimee Wiedrich, Sydney Brunmeier, Morgan Hochsprung, Katie Duttenhefer, Mackenzie Reinhardt, Dawson Brown, Beth Goodwin, & Samenna Knopik.
  • The Middle School Science Olympiad team finished 10th and the Senior High team finished 4th at the regional competition.
  • The Junior High placed 3rd and the Senior High finshed 1st at the Region 4 Acalympics competition. The Senior High team will advance to the state competition on April 18th.
  • Bethany Goodwin and Bethany Leier will compete at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference in San Diego in their online STAR event.
  • Aaron Hushka, Drew Biffert, Spencer Mattheis, Quentin Corcoran, Kaytlin Reich, Levi Randle, Kaylene Klein, Carter Mattheis, Randy Riepl, Bethany Goodwin, Mikayla Ward, Dawson Brown, Eva Byerley, Krista Slaubaugh, and Jonah Zimmerman all qualified for the Know Your State Competition to be held on April 25th.
  • A team of 4 and 4 individuals qualified for the state MathCounts competition which will be held on April 4th. The students are Kora Biffert, Brandon Snyder, Carson Wahl, Garret Weir, Emmalia Frei, Gabe Pfliger, Jacob Driscoll, and Caleb Myhra.
  • Wyatt Carr was chosen as a member of the All Region 7 boys’ basketball team.
  • Beth Goodwin, Morgan Hochsprung, Breanna Sailer, Eileen Addink, and Dawson Brown have all qualified for April 23rd state speech meet.
  • The Novas finished in 7th place at their state tournament. Also, Karlee Schmitt was chosen for the 19U All-State Hockey Team.
  • Kayla Lindquist and Krista Slaubaugh were chosen as members of the All Region 7 girls’ basketball team.
  • Skylar Mullikin was the Mercer County Spelling Bee champion and Alyson Bosch finish second. Both will compete at the state bee March 21st.
  • Eva Byerley was selected to the North Dakota Academic All-State team.
  • Mr. Stewart’s elementary students raised $13,900 for the American Heart Association.
  • The FCCLA student organization had 6 students qualify to compete at the state competition in Bismarck on April 10th through the 12th.
  • Patrick McCarthy and Carter Mattheis earned their Eagle Scout rank for Boy Scouts.
  • LEGO League team finished 31st out of 50 teams as the state tournament.
  • Miss Samantha Steffan, Hazen’s choir director, was awarded the 2016 Outstanding Young Choral Director of Year award.
  • Senior high students Sameena Knopik-trumpet, Tyler Wolf-bari sax, Kayla Weigum-mixed choir, and Cole Dauenhauer were all named to the ND All State music groups.
  • The senior high robotics team consisting of Eva Byerly, Steph Ziegler, Justin Traiser, Jonah Zimmerman, Dawson Brown, & Patrick McCarthy had a top 4 finish at the state competition.
  • Joshua Kaelberer (1st), Bradyn Braithwaite (2nd), and Payton Weisz (3rd) swept the 3rd grade division of this year’s Mercer County Soil Conservation poster contest.
  • Aidric Edwards is the elementary Geography Bee champion.
  • Cole Dauenhauer was selected to perform at the UND Honor String Ensemble festival.
  • Bison volleyball team was presented the NDHSAA Team Scholar award for the teams 3.69 GPA over the course of the vb season.
  • Rachelle Klein was selected as a member of the ND Junior High All-State band. Miss Klein will be a 5th chair flute player.
  • FBLA members participated in the Giving Tree Project and Gingerbread House activity along with Morgan Hochsprung being appointed a Mountains Plans National Council assistant.
  • Eva Byerley received first place in honors at the VFW District 4 Voice of Democracy Oratorical contest.
  • Jacey Mayer was elected as FCCLA District 5 president, Bethany Goodwin organized an event that provided 80 bags of school supplies for less fortunate children, & the FCCLA members donated $434 to the National Breast Cancer foundation.
  • Mr. Helde’s senior high robotics league consists of Logan Sailer, Dawson Brown, Jordan Johnson, Patrick McCarthy, Jonah Zimmerman, Justin Traiser, Eva Byerley, and Stephanie Ziegler.
  • Our awesome school cooks have prepared 34,740 meals during the first 63 days of the school year. That is an average of 550 served daily. Thank you ladies!
  • Football award winners: Jakob Parisien, Chase Bruner, Mason Faut, Jonah Zimmerman, Drew Biffert, Josh Snyder, Logan Sailer, and Thomas Leintz.
  • Tyler Wolf, Jacob Moeykens, Sameena Knopik, Mikayla Ward, and Ben Harvey were selected to perform in the University of North Dakota Honor Band.
  • Tenley Sage accepted as a member of the Junior High All-State choir.
  • Bison volleyball Region 7 champions. Krista Slaubaugh Region 7 senior athlete and All-region, Kayla Lindquist and Stephanie Ziegler All-region, and Linette Irwin Region 7 coach of the year.
  • Drama Club placed 3rd at regionals, Kennedy Sundsbak won a “Superior” acting award, and Kyrah Kay Duttenhefer and Breanna Sailer earned “Honorable Mention” acting awards.
  • ND Wendy’s Heisman winner Krista Slaubaugh and state finalist Jonah Zimmerman.
  • Hazen students who took last year’s ACT had a composite score of 22.39 which was 1.79 points higher than the state average.
